SSL certificate is rising on-line security. Now, even search terms and search results will be encrypted and secured from being intercepted by a third party. It is especially important when Internet access is offered by free hotspots, unknown providers etc.
Users who are not signed into a Google Account may also use the https:// protocol. It will not work automatically. The "s" has to be typed into the URL address.
Google uses Thawte SSL certificates. See details at Google Support.
