The majority of Comodo Certification Authority (CA) shares were sold to Francisco Partners for an undisclosed amount.
Under the agreement, the new CEO of Comodo CA will be the former General Manager of Entrust - Bill Holtz. The founder and CEO of the Comodo Group, Melih Abdulhayoglu, will retain the minority interest. Francisco Partners explains his decision with a large "need for trusted certificates".
As Bill Holtz said:
"Trusted digital certificates will remain a fundamental requirement of today's network security infrastructure for ecommerce and new evolving IoT networks. Francisco Partners has a sound, smart, and aggressive strategy for Comodo CA."
Francisco Partners said Comodo had issued 55 million certificates this year, the highest number in the market, and has seen double-digit growth for "several years".
According to previous announcements, a year after the acquisition of Comodo Group by Francisco Partners, on November 1 Comodo CA announced that from now on it is changing its brand to Sectigo [pronounced. sec-tee-go]. The goal of rebranding is consistency in company communication and better dedication to what Comodo is doing now.
